What are the Board’s Examinations?

  • A California Law and Ethics Examination: The Law & Ethics Examination is designed to assess the applicant's knowledge of and ability to apply legal and ethical standards relating to clinical practice. This will consist of 75 multiple-choice items administered over a 90 minute period. The re-exam waiting period is 90 days. The Law and Ethics Exam Plans outline further information about these exams.
  • The ASWB Clinical Examination for LCSW: The ASWB Clinical Exam is designed to assess an applicant's knowledge of psychosocial principles and methods in treatment and their application, and the ability to make judgments about appropriate techniques, methods and objectives as applicable to the profession's scope of practice. This exam consists of 170-item multiple choice questions administered over a four hour period. The re-exam waiting period is 90 days.
  • A California Clinical Examination: The California Clinical Examination is designed to assess an applicant's knowledge of psychotherapeutic principles and methods in treatment and their application, and the ability to make judgments about appropriate techniques, methods and objectives as applicable to the profession's scope of practice. This exam consists of 170-item multiple choice questions administered over a four hour period and will be comprised of items similar to those that were included on the previous Standard Written and Clinical Vignette Examination. All items will be comprised of a scenario and a single question. The re-exam waiting period is 120 days.

EXAMINATION VENDOR INFORMATION

Psychological Services (PSI) administers the Board's LCSW, LMFT and LPCC Law & Ethics examinations, LMFT Clinical examination and LEP examination. PSI testing centers are located throughout the state as well as some out of state, offering testing 5-6 days a week. Please refer to the candidate handbook for more information on exact locations of test sites. Candidates should not attempt to schedule an examination date with PSI until they receive notification of eligibility from the Board.

To schedule with PSI call (877) 392-6422 or access on-line registration at www.candidate.psiexams.com. When scheduling, candidates need to provide PSI with the BBS file id number on their approval letter.

Candidates who have received notification of exam eligibility, and have not received a candidate handbook within two weeks of the date of being notified, may download the handbook from the PSI’s website.

Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) administers the Board's LCSW clinical examination. Candidates who have passed the California Law & Ethics examination and the evaluation of experience requirement s have been met, will then be notified by the Board of their eligibility to participate in the ASWB Clinical examination. Once a candidate receives the notification, candidates may contact ASWB to register for the Clinical examination. The current registration fee of $260 for the Clinical examination is payable to ASWB. The ASWB Candidate Handbook for the Clinical Exam includes a variety of information as does the “Content Outline and Knowledge Skills and Abilities”. National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) administers the Board’s LPCC clinical examination, National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE) examination. To schedule with NBCC, candidates need to access NBCC’s on-line registration system at www.nbcc.org and provide the BBS file id number on their approval letter. Candidates also need to submit the California Traditional Path Exam Registration Form to NBCC, with the appropriate fee, made payable to NBCC. NBCC’s processing time is approximately four (4) weeks.
