• October 26, 2009: Senate Bill 33 Makes Changes to MFT Supervised Experience Requirements

  Senate Bill 33, recently signed by Governor Schwarzenegger, makes a number of changes to MFT supervised experience requirements for hours earned on or after January 1, 2010.  Board staff is working to make changes to its website, forms, and publications in order to reflect these changes. In the meantime, we have created several resource documents to provide you with information about the upcoming changes, available at (LINK).  We ask that you read these documents thoroughly prior to contacting the board with questions.

• August 10, 2009: The Governor has signed SB 33 (Correa), which makes major changes to the Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) educational requirements effective August 1, 2012. Students who are currently in a MFT program will have until December 31, 2018 to complete their degree program under the current law. The bill would allow schools to adopt the new curriculum early if they wish to do so. The BBS is currently working on a plan to provide further training, technical assistance and other resources to MFT educators in early 2010 and continuing. We will also be working on informational documents to answer questions that educators and students may have.

  SB 33 also contains a number of changes to the MFT supervised experience requirements (Business and Professions Code Section 4980.43), which will take effect on January 1, 2010. The Board's Approved Legislation provides more information about the passage of this bill.
